Exam preparation

Many people say they do not know in detail how to prepare for medical tests. In most cases, these are simply doubts about what to do before undergoing a test, which arise in the patient’s mind – often because they have simply forgotten to ask their doctor for guidance. Each information sheet therefore provides simple guidance on how to prepare for medical tests, setting out the correct procedures to follow for the most common tests.

Every type of test requires proper preparation, as actions taken prior to the sample collection could significantly affect the results. It is therefore important to know what precautions to take before each individual test. In this way, it is possible to obtain results that are as accurate as possible, but above all to avoid having to repeat the tests.

Biological samples for analysis must be collected in special containers purchased from pharmacies or parapharmacies, or provided free of charge by the laboratory.

Inadequate samples will be rejected and the patient will be asked to bring in a new sample collected in accordance with the correct collection instructions provided.

Blood test

Blood tests are laboratory analyses that enable an assessment of a person’s general state of health by examining various parameters: organ function, metabolic values, hormone levels and the presence of any abnormalities.

Stool test

A stool test enables the assessment of the digestive system’s function, identifies the presence of parasites, pathogenic bacteria or occult blood, and provides important information on the state of intestinal health.

Urine culture

A urine culture is a microbiological test of urine that identifies bacteria or other microorganisms responsible for urinary tract infections. It is carried out by collecting a urine sample, discarding the first stream and collecting the next one in a sterile container

Urinary cytology test

A urine cytology test is a laboratory test that examines the cells present in the urine to identify any cellular abnormalities. It is mainly used in the monitoring and diagnosis of urinary tract disorders.

Sputum:
Culture test

A sputum culture test makes it possible to identify the presence of bacteria or other microorganisms in the respiratory tract and to determine which antibiotic is most effective for treatment (antibiogram).

Collection of semen

A semen culture test checks for any infections. The test helps to assess male fertility.

24-hour urine collection

A 24-hour urine collection allows the total amount of various substances excreted by the kidneys over the course of a full day to be assessed, providing information on kidney function and metabolism.

For creatinine clearance, a blood sample must be taken on the morning of submission to measure serum creatinine levels.

Scotch test:
Pinworm test

The tape test is a simple and effective method for diagnosing the presence of pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis), intestinal parasites that are particularly common in children, by collecting the eggs they lay in the perianal area.
