Urine culture
Items required
A sterile, wide-mouthed plastic container with a screw-on lid.
The container to be used can be collected from the blood collection centre or purchased from a pharmacy.
Tests carried out
The test involves screening for:

Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria

Fungi
Any ongoing antibiotic treatment may affect the results and must be reported to the laboratory.
Storage: +2°/8°C; deliver to the laboratory within a maximum of 4 hours of collection.
Collection procedure
Collect the first urine of the morning in the sterile wide-mouth container:

after thoroughly cleansing the external genitalia with soapy water, rinse and dry with a clean cloth

discard the initial stream of urine and collect the midstream urine directly into the container, taking care not to contaminate the rim, lid or interior of the container with your hands or genitals

discard the final stream of urine
-
seal the container securely
