Scotch test – Pinworm screening
How to prepare
-
Carry out the test in the morning, as soon as you wake up, before washing
-
Do not wash the perianal area or use a bidet
-
Do not apply any creams or ointments to the area
-
Repeat the test for 3 consecutive mornings to increase its reliability
How to collect the sample
-
Prepare the materials the evening before (transparent adhesive tape and microscope slide provided by the laboratory)
-
Upon waking, BEFORE going to the toilet or washing
-
Gently apply the adhesive tape to the perianal area, pressing lightly for a few seconds
-
Peel off the tape and stick it onto the slide with the adhesive side facing the slide
-
For young children, have an adult carry out the sample collection whilst the child is lying on their front
-
Store the slides at room temperature
-
Submit all samples together to the laboratory
Useful information
The test is painless and non-invasive. Collecting samples on three consecutive days significantly increases the likelihood of detecting the parasite. If symptoms persist despite negative results, consult your doctor to discuss further investigations.
