24-hour urine collections
How to prepare

Continue with your usual diet and routine, unless otherwise advised by your doctor

Avoid strenuous physical activity during the collection period

Follow any specific dietary restrictions advised by your doctor

Make a note of all medicines taken during the collection period
How to carry out the collection

Upon waking (e.g. 7.00 am), empty your bladder completely into the toilet and discard this first urine sample

Make a note of the start time of the collection

From this point onwards, collect ALL urine passed over the next 24 hours in the container provided

Store the container in a cool place or in the fridge during the collection period

The following morning, at the same time as the start (7.00 am), empty your bladder again and collect this final urine sample as well

Measure the total volume if required

Mix thoroughly and transfer a sample to the designated container if instructed to do so

Deliver promptly to the laboratory
Useful information
It is essential to collect ALL urine passed, without missing any voids. If you miss a collection, the test must be repeated. Some tests require specific preservatives in the container: follow the laboratory’s instructions.
