24-hour urine collections

How to prepare

  • Continue with your usual diet and routine, unless otherwise advised by your doctor

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity during the collection period

  • Follow any specific dietary restrictions advised by your doctor

  • Make a note of all medicines taken during the collection period

How to carry out the collection

  • Upon waking (e.g. 7.00 am), empty your bladder completely into the toilet and discard this first urine sample

  • Make a note of the start time of the collection

  • From this point onwards, collect ALL urine passed over the next 24 hours in the container provided

  • Store the container in a cool place or in the fridge during the collection period

  • The following morning, at the same time as the start (7.00 am), empty your bladder again and collect this final urine sample as well

  • Measure the total volume if required

  • Mix thoroughly and transfer a sample to the designated container if instructed to do so

  • Deliver promptly to the laboratory

Useful information

It is essential to collect ALL urine passed, without missing any voids. If you miss a collection, the test must be repeated. Some tests require specific preservatives in the container: follow the laboratory’s instructions.
